Astro Images That REALLY Make You Think
Last August the planet Mars was the closer than it will be again for several thousand years. If you live in the northern hemisphere, look to the south east after sunset. If the Moon is not us, mars is the brightest object in the sky (unless of course you happen to see a UFO). The planet is reddest earlier due to it being low in the sky.

Home, Sweet Home - The Earth 1994
When Apollo 11 astronaut James Lovel brought back the very first image of the Earth from space it had a profound affect on many people. It was the first time in known history that mankind had seen the planet from space. There it was, a beautiful blue marble floating in the vastness of space. Actually, the Earth is moving through space at tremendous speed as it orbits the Sun. Just the same, it is an awesome image to ponder. All that we have ever been and done, right there. It also made many realize that our planet is a closed system. Except for space dust and meteors that fall to Earth, the air, water and material is the same as it has always been. Truly, it is the clearest example of the saying, "Perspective adds wisdom to any given situation."

Our Closest Celestial Neighbor - The Moon
Many times on a clear night, I look at the Moon and it's hard to believe that we have actually been there. It's been almost 25 years since our last visit. Some don't believe that we were there, that the whole Space Program and the Moon landing was the biggest hoax of all time. I don't believe that. However, one strange thing has recently come out as a result of Dr. Steven Greer's "Disclosure Project (his website is... http://www.dicclosureproject.org). One of the over 400 government and industry witnesses has stated that while in the Army working as a photographer, he had the opportunity to see aerial photographs taken during the flyover of the dark side of the Moon. This retired military man, who is willing to testify before Congress) said that the photos clearly showed "structures" and what looked to him like a "base." If he weren't a person with SECRET clearance, it would be easy to say, "BUNK!" But...

The Milky Way Galaxy

The Milky Way Galaxy is our galactic home. When you look into a clear, Moonless, winter night sky you will see a huge band of stars that stretches across the night sky. That's the Milky Way Galaxy and our Sun is just one of BILLIONS of other stars, some smaller than our Sun, and others thousands of times the size of our Sun. They are so far away, they just look like "pin prick holes in a colorless sky" as the Moody Blues say on the 1967 "Days Of Future Past" album.
It's estimated that there are over 200 BILLION stars in the Milky Way, and from edge to edge it is 150,000 lightyears across. In other words, "if" you could travel at the speed of light (186,000 miles-per-second!!!) it would only take 150,000 years to make the trip. WOW! And, we now know that in the middle of the Milky Way there is a HUGE Black Hole. Now, here's the real kicker. Beyond the Milky Way there are 10's of thousands of galaxies, some larger and some smaller than the Milky Way.

The Milky Way In Infrared

Explanation: At night, from a dark location, part of the clear sky looks milky. This unusual swath of dim light is generally visible during any month and from any location. Until the invention of the telescope, nobody really knew what the "Milky Way" was. About 300 years ago telescopes caused a startling revelation: the Milky Way was made of stars. Only 70 years ago, more powerful telescopes brought the further revelation that the Milky Way is only one galaxy among many. Now telescopes in space allow yet deeper understanding. The above picture was taken by the COBE satelite and shows the plane of our Galaxy in infrared light. The thin disk of our home spiral galaxy is clearly apparent, with stars appearing white and interstellar dust appearing red.

The Milky-Way Band

Explanation: Most bright stars in our Milky Way Galaxy reside in a disk. Since our Sun also resides in this disk, these stars appear to us as a diffuse band that circles the sky. The above panorama of a southern band of the Milky Way's disk was taken from Australia. A 40-minute exposure was used, and the colors were digitally enhanced. Visible are many bright stars, dark dust lanes, red emission nebulae, blue reflection nebulae, and clusters of stars. In addition to all this matter that we can see, astronomers suspect there exists even more dark matter that we cannot see.

M31 - The Andromada Galaxy
The Andromeda Galaxy is the nearest large galaxy in what is called "The Local Group" of galaxies, consisting of 16 galaxies. Andromeda is larger that the Milky Way and is 9 quintillion miles from us. Get this, that's 9,000,000,000000,000,000,000 miles!!!! The number is so large that it is almost meaningless. When we look through a telescope at Andromeda, the light we are seeing is absolutely ancient, having left Andromeda when there was no life on Earth and the planet was being formed. On the clearest night sky, it looks like a faint little fuzzy.
